Blurred Perspective.

I have been loving the colors of Autumn that are on display right now. The yellows, the oranges and especially the reds. I loved the way the light shone on the leaves. It was golden light, that hour of the evening where the magic happens. My shutter speed was high and caught the leaves so that the huge wind we were having this day was not blowing at all.
I kind of missed the wind though and the effect of movement and the blur that comes with that, so I put the blur back! Kind of like it!

Wild Birds

Wild Bird Wednesday
Wordless Wednesday with Joy
Here is a selection of birds who call the Butterfly Garden their home!
I have posted a couple of previous posts of photos taken there, if you want to go and check those out as well!

Not sure what kind these are but I thought they were adorable!

This garden housed budgies and canaries as well.

Enjoy your week!

Fracture.

Have you ever decided you are going to make some changes and you make a plan for those changes and start following the path to success in accomplishing those goals?
You take each step along the path one by one and slowly but surely you are crossing each step along the way off the list and are closer and closer to accomplishing your goal.
Success is just around the corner, heck you can almost see it!
And then out of nowhere you are hit by an obstacle. You didn't see it coming until it was almost on you. And it steamrolls you. That obstacle steamrolled me but good.
Last week I showed you a photo of me stuck on the couch with my injured leg.
I just found out yesterday after the MRI results came in that it is fractured. Now another hospital trip later and a trip to the Specialist and I am in a traction splint cast and crutches for the next month minimum. No weight bearing. No running down nice paths such as these photos for now.
No suntanning one leg, or dipping my toes in the lake.
So now I have my goal still in my sights, but I have to adjust the outcome I'd set to achieve it.
Sometimes the best laid plans have to be laid aside.
You have to be ready for Plan A to lead to Plan B or even on to Plan E, F or G.
Have you ever been hit by your own particular brand of Steamroller???
Do share!

Finding the Pot of Gold

Lets have a Barbeque and a Fire my sister said. The sky is blue and the wind is calm, so its a good night for a fire don't you think???
So the Barbeque was good, we all ate a huge amount of Barbequed Ribs, finger licking good!

But that sky was getting cloudy and dark and looking a bit ominous.

And when the match was struck to light the fire, it started to rain. And rain. And Thunder and Lightning. So what to do when it rains on your fire, move your chairs against the house under the eaves so that the only thing that gets wet is your knees and feet!

But it wasn't a complete rain out!. Into every life a little rain will fall. The rainbow at the end is a huge reward for bit of rain.

You can make plans, look forward to the results, but the outcome may not be what you planned!
And no matter what, its all good!

State of Emergency

It has been a stressful week here in our town. We live in Alberta, which has been hit with widespread devastating  flooding this past week. The destruction has been terrible, with whole towns wiped out, thousands and thousands of people losing their homes, their belongings and sadly some lives lost as well.
Our town of Medicine Hat, has been under a State of Emergency now since last Friday. Over ten thousand people under mandatory evacuation notice. Our population is only 65,000 people so one sixth of the entire population of our town evacuated.
Calgary was hit so hard with flooding that they had to release water from the dam outside of Calgary which feeds the Bow and the Elbow rivers which empty right into the South Saskatchewan River, which then comes down and right through Medicine Hat. As soon as they released water through the dam, Medicine Hat was facing flooding as well.

This is the flood water flowing under the Findlay Bridge. It is not even at crest levels here.
Medicine hat is divided into North and South sections and joined together with three bridges, the Findlay bridge, the Maple bridge and the Trans Canada bridge. As well there is a train trestle from one side to the other.
The water was just raging through, carrying tons of debris that they had to try and keep from damming up the river as well, so the water could flow through.

Thankfully like other Alberta communities there were not any houses destroyed and sent into the river. We just had a lot of river debris such as fallen trees, wood etc.

Roads were flooded over. This road leads to City Hall, the Court buildings and Remand center, the Library and downtown Medicine Hat.

The Police were a heavy presence in the town. I know, because in an effort to take some photos of flooded out and evacuated areas, we managed to get ourselves thrown out of one of the evacuation areas.

Some of the road closures were flooded over as well!

We were lucky to get some warning of the impending flooding, unlike areas like Calgary which did not get any warning and had some devastating damage done.
Red Cross came in right away and set up evacuation centers, and co-ordinated volunteer services. Soldiers came in and helped as well. Hundreds of volunteers worked tirelessly well into the night to help with sandbagging, building berms, helping move people out of evacuation areas, and all the other countless jobs that go into preparing for the worst.

In my job, one of our company's Group homes was located right in the center of the biggest evacuation area and we had to evacuate our five individuals who call the house their home. We also had to evacuate our company offices, Day program for Adult and for Children, and our Cafeteria and training center. It was a huge job. We still do not know the condition of the group home, but we are working hard in five different locations now to ensure our individuals are safe, comfortable and secure until we can get them back into thier home again.

The river has crested as of yesterday and thankfully we weathered through. Only two of the three bridges were closed, our water and power systems for the town which were also located in the path of the flood managed to make it through. We have to boil water in some areas but that is a small price to pay! We never lost power or water where we live.
The stairs showing here at the water level are stairs that lead up to City Hall downtown.
It was weird to go downtown and not find anything open and the area covered in sandbags and plastic.

The worst of the water is now through, and we weathered it well. The work is nowhere near done though. The cleanup begins especially for the large flooded out areas. Some people will not be able to return to their homes for a long time, if ever.

I'm grateful to have come through unscathed, and my heart goes out to those who were directly impacted. Those who had to leave their homes, their posessions, whose livelyhoods were affected. But in the midst of this disaster, I am heartened to see kindness, selflessness, community, care and concern in every corner. And that is the beautiful thing about this terrible event.

Change.

It started with a nice walk in the park, along the river.
Just one Caterpillar, climbing up my Hubby's leg. At the time we were having a deep discussion about changes, as we were walking. Thinking that we might have to readdress our goals and what our timelines were working out to be.
And along came a Caterpillar.
If you can get past the phase of Caterpillars eating every leaf in sight and spinning cacoons here there and everywhere, and wait the time it takes for them to morph into a beautiful butterfly, then its not so bad.
Caterpillars change. The change is inevitable. They either die or they change.

Its the same with change. Its inevitable. You can't stay the same, stagnant and going nowhere. Change makes sure it moves you, even into unknown territory. You must change.
And there are many ways to suffer the death of not moving with the change.
We talked about the changes we were facing, the fact that those things we wanted might not be the things we needed.

Its strange how Caterpillars all congregate onto one spot on the trunk of the tree. Why there?
Its kind of like thoughts. You get something in your mind It stays there, going round and round. And grows. It eats into the wood. It marks the spot, especially if you don't do anything to rid yourself of it.
We had a lot of things to wade through and search through to get to the bottom. It was marking the spot.
We had to address it.
One day the butterfly will emerge.
We will see the change.

This Old House

My sister and I recently took a road trip from Medicine Hat to Edmonton to see my niece, her daughter graduate from her Caregiving course. We rented a car, filled it full of our bags, our snacks and drinks, and our trusty set of directions located on a private Facebook message about how to get from here to there in no uncertain terms! You know the kind, go this many miles to this road turn right and continue till you get to this road, turn left and so on and so on. We had about  6 hours of travel and barring our stops for more food and those freshen up stops we made it to Edmonton in 7 hours. Pretty good, right??
We had a blast in Edmonton, and really enjoyed proud Mom and Auntie moments watching Tracey receive  her Certificate. We shopped till we dropped. We ate more food in three days than most eat in a week. But like all holidays, they must come to an end and we had to go home.

That is where the challenges began. Have you ever tryed to take the list of directions that brought you to one place and turn it around so it can take you back to where you came from?
Well, needless to say, we ran into a few directional difficulties (detours) and we ended up travelling down a couple of roads that were not exactly on our backward map.

It can't be a mistake if it takes you to places you might never of seen had it not been for that unplanned detour, can it???
I would never of seen this abandoned relic of an old house sitting in the middle of a farmer's field had it not been for that particular detour!

I stopped short of climbing through the barbed wire fence that surrounded the house to get closer and take better pictures of the place.
I have been known to do that on occasion. Probably not the safest thing to do around these parts. I have been told that there are Rattle Snakes in this province and that the farmers don't take too lightly to trespassers on their property.
This old house has seen better days. Its covered inside and out with graffiti, broken windows, peeling boards and surrounded in brown grass.. It has broken stairs and furniture inside. The elements have taken their toll.
But it has history and if it could, probably a story or two to tell.
And I would of never seen it if it had not been for that darn detour. (Detour- that's my story and I am sticking to it)
I'd love to tell you exactly where this place was but we were kind of lost, you know, the detour!!

Finally, a Storm!

We are located in an area  of Alberta right now that is famous for its fast and furious storms, so needless to say we have been waiting and waiting for one to show up. Finally we were rewarded! It was amazing how this storm blew in in about ten minutes time, chilled the air and darkened the skies, winds blew like crazy, and hail and snow fell. At the peak of the storm we were rewarded with one big flash of lightning and a crack of thunder so loud and powerful that it shook the house and rattled the china in the cabinet. I've never heard a crack of thunder that loud!

I ran out the front door to snap a few pictures, and almost got blown off my feet with the force of the wind. Two big tumbleweeds rolled down the street so fast I never managed to catch a photo of them. The clouds went from white and puffy, to grey and ominous, to black.

Some other brave souls out on the street checking out the incoming storm.

When the hail started it dropped pea size hail balls and they came down almost sideways.

My hubby and I were so excited to see our first storm, we were running back and forth between the front door and the back door to try and see as much of it as we could. My sister, who lives here and has seen many a storm just shook her head at our little back and forth frenzy to take it all in!  It's not new when you have seen lots of storms.

A half hour after the storm started it moved on. We only had that one crack of thunder, and it was gone. Now I am waiting again for storm number 2!!!
